Tottenham legend Robbie Keane has commented on why his transfer to Liverpool failed. Keane left Spurs to join the Reds in 2008 for £19 million and it was thought that he could be the man to help the club launch a Premier League title challenge.
However after scoring just several goals from 28 appearances, he ended up rejoining Tottenham just six months later.
Keane would have been disappointed with what had transpired especially as he was considered at the time to be one of the most lethal forwards in the Premier League due to his exploits with Spurs for whom he ended up scoring 122 goals.
Keane has now spoken about why his Liverpool stint failed and blamed Rafa Benitez as the Spaniard played him out of position.
He said, “He wanted to change me to a left winger. I am clearly not a left winger, and that is obviously clear for everyone to see.
“The first 20 minutes he wanted me to play left wing, and obviously I had never played it before, so it was new to me.
“When I did play up front I scored goals. But when I did play, I wasn’t going to play the next day, which for a striker is very difficult.”
