Football pundit Paul Merson has said that Diafra Sakho’s 90th minute winning goal for West Ham against Swansea on Saturday probably saved Hammers manager Slaven Bilic from losing his job.
Both sides entered the game in poor form. There was intense pressure on Bilic heading into the game and had the Hammers not achieved a favorable result, there is a strong chance that he would have been sacked.
Many fans of the club also appear to be frustrated with the Croatians methods as they jeered during half time as well as when Javier Hernandez was substituted.
When asked if Sakho’s late winner helped save Bilic’s job, Merson said, “I’m going to say yeah. I turned round to Charlie [Nicholas] with about 10 minutes to go and I said, ‘Slaven could be in trouble here’.
“It was the performance, and then he made the substitutions. He brought off Hernandez and the crowd went mad and you’re thinking then, ‘if this doesn’t go right…’, but the subs came on and it worked a treat.”
Wales manager Chris Coleman as well as former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti have been linked with the managerial position at West Ham should the club decide to sack Bilic.
