With Everton star Wayne Rooney having retired from international football, it will be up to Jermain Defoe to serve as a mentor to young up and coming players within the Three Lions setup.

Following some impressive form for Sunderland last season, the 34-year-old Defoe earned himself a recall to the England squad earlier this year for the first time since 2013 and is now eyeing a place in the squad that will travel to the World Cup next year.

Defoe is the longest serving player in Gareth Southgate’s squad by some distance and he will be a good mentor to players within the squad.

Having been a professional footballer for almost 20 years, he has profound insight into the game, having gone through plenty of highs and lows during his career.

Defoe left the Black Cats following the club’s relegation at the end of last season and has linked up with Bournemouth in order to improve his chances.
