According to Portugal newspaper Record (via Football-London), West Ham are “doing everything possible” to get a deal done for Sporting Lisbon’s defensive midfielder William Carvalho, with manager Slaven Bilic keen on adding the Portugal international to his ranks to save his future.
The Hammers have shipped 10 goals in their opening first 3 league games, and the Croatian boss now sees the urgent need for the blocking midfielder.
Sporting Lisbon have held out for £40million for Carvalho, but West Ham aren’t yielding, and despite having agreed personal terms with the 25-year-old, a move appeared all but dead in the water last week.
A summer exit looks imminent for the Euros 2016 winner, though, and has been unavailable for selection for recent Sporting’s games as a result of “advanced negotiations with an English club” according to Record.
The Hammers are said to be leading the race for Carvalho who has also interested numerous Premier League outifts.
With the likes of Pedro Obiang and Declan Rice underwhelming thus far, the stability and quality control Carvalho offers in the middle of the park would help West Ham get back to winning ways should he be signed.
To land the Portuguese, the London outfit might have to meet all of his release clause, and that should be nothing compared to the early relegation scare they might find themselves in should they fail to turn results around sooner rather than later.
