Everton’s Wayne Rooney has announced that he has retired from international football. During his illustrious career, the 31-year-old Rooney went on to become the Three Lions all- time leading goal scorer with 53 strikes from 119 appearances.

The veteran however lost his place in the national team last season as his playing time was limited at United.

Since joining boyhood club Everton this summer though, Rooney’s performances have rejuvenated so much so that England manager Gareth Southgate reportedly phoned him on Tuesday to inform him that he wanted him to be part of the England national team that will be named on Thursday.

During the conversation, Rooney however informed that England manager that he will play no further part in his country’s international matches.

He has now said in a statement regarding his retirement, “It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches. I really appreciated that.

“However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football.

“It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me.

“Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped me. But I believe now is the time to bow out.”
