Sunderland boss Grayson provides positive update regarding popular player’s fitness

Sunderland manager Simon Grayson has revealed that Duncan Watmore in on track to give the Black Cats a boost after the first international break next month.

The 23-year-old Watmore has not played since he ruptured his cruciate knee ligament in early December and had to undergo a second operation in April.

Watmore has been making progress on the sideline since and has been seen working hard while training to regain his fitness.

Now in an update to Watmore’s injury, Grayson said, “It will be the international break when he comes back but he is making good progress. He can’t wait to wear the red and white shirt again. Hopefully he could be back for one of the first two games after the break.

“In terms of his calibre of player I think he is one of the most talented here at the club. He has that energy, that pace, he has the work-rate the supporters love.”

Grayson will know that promotion during their first season back in the Championship will be very difficult but he will need to make the Black Cats as competitive as possible this season.

It is quite evident that the former England under-21 international Watmore will form a key part of the Black Cats plans for the season once he returns from injury.

The Black Cats began their Championship campaign with a decent 1-1 draw against Derby County, though they will know that a lot of hard work still needs to be put in if they wish to perform well this season.
