West Ham United defender Jose Fonte has spoken out about his move from Southampton during the January transfer window and controversially said that the Hammers “Would take care of my family in ways that Southampton weren’t willing to.”
The 33-year-old, who spent several years at St Mary’s serving as club captain in the process, also described reports indicating he had submitted a transfer request as lies.
During his time with the Saints, Fonte had established himself as a favorite in the hearts of many fans and played a crucial role during the clubs rise from the English League One to the Premiership.
It now appears that he is no longer on good terms with his former club. He said, “You do your best for yourself and your family. You’ve got to fight for what you believe. I respected the club, but they weren’t willing to find an agreement and reach a compromise.”
