Report: Manchester United man set for new deal

Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard is close to signing a new deal with the Red Devils, according to ESPN.

The 23-year-old, whose extra-time goal against Crystal Palace at Wembley last season clinched the FA Cup trophy for his team, scored United’s opener in the 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the Community shield last month, but had to miss the first few games of the league season through injury.

Lingard returned to United’s starting eleven against Manchester City last weekend, but failed to impress and was subbed off at half-time.

Despite his poor performance against City, Lingard is still an important squad player for United as his pace and high defensive work rate make him perfectly suited to Mourinho’s tactics.

Lingard had loan spells at Leicester City, Birmingham City, Brighton and Derby County between 2012 and 2015, but surprisingly managed to establish himself in Louis Van Gaal’s starting eleven last season and made the right wing position his own.

He’s unlikely to be a regular starter in Mourinho’s team this season, but it’d definitely be a good idea to offer him a new deal as he’s very useful to have in the squad.
