Michael Carrick has signed a new contract with Manchester United, according to Perth Glory chief-executive Peter Filopoulos.
The A-League side has been trying to convince Carrick to move to Australia, but Filopoulos claims their pursuit of the player is now over.
“It was a long shot opportunity due to Richard Garcia’s relationship with Michael,” he told FourFourTwo magazine.
“Perth was an option for Michael Carrick as he was going through what he was going to do in his career had he not landed a new signature with Manchester United.
“We understand he’s now secured an extension with Manchester United so that’s off the table. It’s certainly was an option to him and his family for lifestyle reasons.”
Carrick’s future has been the subject of intense media speculation due to his contract situation, but it now appears as though he’s set to extend his stay at the club he’s been representing since 2006.
The former West Ham and Tottenham player has made 421 appearances since arriving at Old Trafford 10 years ago and despite being 34 years old, United’s current vice-captain was the team’s most reliable midfielder last season.
The Perth Glory CEO’s comments don’t make Carrick’s new United deal official, but it does seem like Mourinho wants the veteran midfielder to stay at the club for at least another season.
Keeping Carrick at the club would be the right choice. He shouldn’t be starting every single game, but is still good enough to contribute to the team next season.
His experience could also be invaluable for youngsters such as Borthwick-Jackson, Fosu-Mensah, Pereira and Rashford.
