Strongest Possible Everton Lineup vs Crystal Palace: 4-2-3-1 with James McCarthy in doubt

Everton have a home fixture on Monday this week, which is a great excuse for Evertonians in North America to take a break from their busy work and get themselves to a pub to watch the Toffees. If the game turns out anything like the last league match, you’re going to need a drink.

The opponent for this one is seventh place Crystal Palace. Everton come into this game having advanced to the semi-finals of the League Cup after beating Middlesbrough 2-0. Crystal Palace are riding high coming into this one after a dismantling of Newcastle 5-1 last weekend.

Goalkeeper

Joel Robles was once again given the start for the Cup match, but I expect Tim Howard to retain his spot in goal for league matches.

Left Back

It was great for Everton fans to see Leighton Baines back on the pitch after a seven month injury hiatus. That said, it seems like Everton fans will have to wait for his return to the starting XI after Martinez said they are going to slowly work him back into things as he regains his sharpness. That means that Brendan Galloway will continue his tenure at the back for Everton on Monday.

Center Backs

With both Phil Jagielka and Tyias Browning out injured, starting John Stones and Ramiro Funes Mori is not only a no brainer but it’s a really the only option.

Right Back

Seamus Coleman. That is about all that needs to be said here. The Irishman isn’t going to be unseated.

Defensive Midfield

The selection here is going to be driven by whether or not James McCarthy is fit in time for the game. The Irish international missed the midweek game with a hip injury that is still lingering. If McCarthy can’t go, either Muhamed Besic or Tom Cleverley will likely partner with Gareth Barry. I don’t think Besic has been given enough opportunities, so I’m going to give him the nod here.

Right Wing

At the beginning of the season this position was hard to call, but since then Gerard Deulofeu has made this an easy call. The Spaniard has been in great form lately delivering a gorgeous assist for the team against Middlesbrough. Look for him to continue that form here, which means Aaron Lennon will have to continue in his bench role.

Center Attacking Midfield

Ross Barkley will continue to roll in this position for Everton.

Left Wing

I’m expecting Martinez to field Arouna Koné on the left again. Personally, I’m going to keep beating the dead horse and advocate that instead the manager selects Kevin Mirallas. The Belgium man has fallen out of favor this season, but I still see him as the team’s best option on the left. Also, in the mix is Tom Cleverley who has put in some solid performances for Everton this season.

Striker

Another easy one to call, free scoring Romelu Lukaku gets the nod here.
