The man to replace Petr Cech at Arsenal

Arsenal’s biggest move over the summer transfer window was undoubtedly the signing of long-time Chelsea keeper, Petr Cech, but another net-minder for the Gunners could look to make his name on the squad.

With the departure of Emiliano Martinez on loan for the remainder of the season, 21-year-old Matt Macey will likely be given the opportunity to show his worth on the Arsenal squad.

Macey, standing at a dominant 6’7”, spent his youth career with Football League Two side, Bristol Rovers, before joining the Arsenal academy in 2013. While Macey spent a month on loan in January with another League Two club, Accrington Stanley, he received consistent first team play, appearing in four matches.Upon his return to Arsenal, Macey continued to be the first-choice keeper for the U21 squad, impressing with his size and strength.

Only recently called up to Arsenal’s first team squad, Macey must now show his worth behind Cech and David Ospina.

While Macey is relatively inexperienced, fans should expect to see the young keeper in Capital One Cup matches to gain valuable first team experience for Arsene Wenger. Macey’s great presence in the air and ability to maintain the box should come as crucial assets to garnering attention and displaying his ability to maintain First Team play.

The addition of Matt Macey to Arsenal’s first team roster adds youth and depth between the post, and if Arsene Wenger is able to utilize Macey’s size and box presence, the young keeper will undoubtedly be a player to watch in the near future. Gaining first team experience is a priority for the system’s youth player and if Macey displays composure during his time on the pitch, he will surely be put on Arsenal’s radar as a future first-choice net minder at the Emirates.
