There is perhaps no manager in the world as good as Arsene Wenger in young unearthing gems and turning into world class players. From Thierry Henry to Cesc Fabregas, Wenger has taken some of the greatest names in the world football under his wings and turned them into global superstars of the game.
Wenger’s philosophy has been very successful in his near two decade reign as Arsenal manager and to continue the tradition, it has been reported that the Frenchman is eyeing a swoop for another extremely talented young player in the form of Kevin Mendez.
Mendez is a young Uruguayan striker who currently plies his trade for Penarol. The 18-year old burst into the scene during last summer’s Under-17s World Cup and is now considered one of the brightest young prospects to have emerged from South America in recent times.
With Mendez creating waves in Uruguay, it has not been a surprise to see the striker attracting admiring glances from a host of top clubs in Europe and now it has been claimed that Arsenal will be the first ones to make a move for the 18-year old.
According to reports emerging out of Italy, the Gunners have laid the groundwork to land Mendez and will be making their move in the coming weeks.
Mendez was previously linked with a transfer to Liverpool last season, as it was reported that Uruguayan superstar Luis Suarez had urged the Reds’ hierarchy to make a move for the young striker.
However, Liverpool did not act on Suarez’s recommendation and they could well be left to count the cost as Arsenal have now expressed their genuine interest in signing Mendez.
