According to Daily Mail, Manchester United is close to signing the young Portuguese William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon.

The defensive midfielder has a £37 million buyout clause in his contract, but David Moyes will try to land him for less.

United’s interest in Sporting’s midfielder has been well known for quite some time, but now it has emerged again as a nearly done deal.

Allegedly, his agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents Cristiano Ronaldo, was in Manchester United’s AON training complex, in which he discussed Carvallo’s transfer with United’s officials.

David Moyes is keen on buying the Portuguese international before the World Cup in Brazil, since he expects that Carvalho’s price will rise after the summer competition. It is believed that Sporting’s midfielder clinched a regular starting spot in Portugal’s setup.

Additionally, other clubs, such as United’s Premier League rivals Manchester City and Arsenal are interested in buying out Carvalho’s contract from Sporting, so Moyes wants to hurry up, and seal the deal with Mendes.

William Carvalho is a strong anchorman in the midfield, he prefers a very physical style of play, but he can be lethal when decides to go up front, and possesses a quality long range shot.  His game could be compared to early Yaya Toure’s, and Moyes is certainly hoping that this youngster could evolve into a player with similar characteristics and quality as Toure.

Carvalho should provide cover and stability to Manchester United’s midfield, which was very vulnerable this season, sometimes unrecognizable, since it has often been the case that even much smaller clubs in the English Premier League dominate in ball possession against United.

Taking into consideration the projection of his long-term development, we could reasonably expect this player to be a real asset to United’s squad in years to come.

His strength, positioning and determination would make him a perfect fit for the slightly deteriorating Manchester United squad.

This rumor emerged in all major English media, agent Mendes was seen in United’s training center, so it is very likely that this transfer has a big chance of being pushed through.

Probably, what is left for the two clubs in order to close this deal is to agree a transfer fee for Carvalho, with United trying to lower the 37 million price tag.
