Liverpool passed the transfer deadline without any signings after their failed attempts to incorporate Mohamed Salah from FC Basel, and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk winger, Yevhen Konoplyanka. Salah was snatched by their rival, Chelsea, while Konoplyanka was just within a whisker of completing the switch to Liverpool but both clubs failed to reach an agreement.
According to a report from Liverpoolfc.com, Brendan Rodgers does not show much complaint from the slow transfer window, and still shows his confidence for his current squad. He said, “I’m very happy with the players that I have here and we’ll fight right until the end to arrive where we want to.” The forty-one-year-old Irishman will focus on leading his team to a strong finish in order to position Liverpool at least in the Top 4 of the standings.
With some of their players out injured, The Reds now only have less than 20 senior players available in their squad. However, they are still in good shape as they sit in 4th place of the Barclays Premier League, while also having the second most proficient offense with 58 goals.
Liverpool is 2 points above 5th placed Everton, and 3 points behind 3rd place Chelsea. They are just behind Manchester City in terms of goals scored and their prolific striker, Luis Suarez is now the top scorer with 23 goals.
In the FA Cup, Liverpool is also in a positive position after going through to the 4th round following their victory against Bournemouth 2-0. In the 4th round, they will have an intense and difficult challenge at the Emirates against Arsenal on February 16, 2014.
Although the Winter transfer window passed without any player incorporation, Rodgers is a firm believer that his current squad has the necessary talent and chemistry to prolong the team’s performances. At the end, this team has improved substantially from last season, therefore a Top 4 finish is a realistic goal as opposed to a title.
