During the Mexican league 2012 players draft, Chivas was focused on obtaining three new players; a defender, a midfielder, and a forward. Before the draft begun, it was known that they had transfered their defensive starter Johnny Magallon to Leon, and their long-time offensive winger, Alberto Medina to Pachuca.
By transfering two regular starters and leaders of the team, Chivas knew they strongly needed at least two major deals to replace Magallon and Medina. They quickly signed veteran midfielder Luis Perez from Monterrey, but as the hours went by there was no word of another solid move by the team from the ‘Perla Tapatia’. It was mentioned they were after Rafael Marquez Lugo from Morelia but those rumors were quickly shut down. Other names like Aldo De Nigris from Monterrey and Javier Orozco from Cruz Azul were also rumored but hours went by and no deal was finished.
As the last minutes of the Liga MX players draft expired, Chivas was finally able to agree to terms with Monarcas Morelia to buy the rights of 31 year old striker Marquez Lugo for an estimated $3 million. With this transfer, Chivas will have an improvement in their atack, thus allowing youth promises like Carlos Fierro and Erick Torres to develop as subs.
Marquez Lugo is an upgrade, however, is this the answer Chivas was looking for and is that player really worth $3 million? Only time will answer that, but what is obvious is that owner Jorge Vergara finally listened to its fan base and opened his wallet to make a couple of purchases.
