Celtic were reportedly leading the race to sign Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba, however they could be set for disappointment as Rafa Benitez has so far struggled to make additions to his side.
This means that the Magpies manager could opt to keep his squad intact for the rest of the season.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to bolster his defence as his side prepares for the second half of the season as well as for their Europa League last 32 clash against Zenit St Petersburg and he is hoping to recruit Mbemba.
Though Mbemba has not featured much this season, the Magpies could be short of options at the back should they have an injury crisis and as they have not made squad additions, it could be hard for them to let the Congo international leave the club this month.
Rodgers will now have to look elsewhere if he wants to bolster his backline.
