This Sunday, January 7, 2018 (10:00 AM Pacific) Toluca will host Chivas de Guadalajara at the Estadio Nemesio Diez for a game in the first round of matches in the Liga MX Clausura 2018. Toluca made the playoffs in the Apertura 2017 while Chivas had a very disappointing tournament but this game should be an exciting one to start off the Clausura.
Toluca finished in fifth place in the Apertura 2017 but was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by Monarcas Morelia. Los Diablos Rojos did not have a very exciting offseason but made some interesting signings by bringing in Angel Reyna, Luis Quinones and Leonel Lopez. Los Escarlatas did not lose much in the offseason as the only departures were Carlos Esquivel to Veracruz and Efrain Velarde to Monterrey.
Hernan Cristante has a good enough side to make the playoffs again and should be able to win this game especially with the home-field advantage. The main player to watch on Toluca will be Fernando Uribe, who scored 10 goals between the Apertura 2017 regular season and playoffs.
Chivas’ main additions this offseason were the two youngsters from Santos Laguna, Gael Sandoval and Ronaldo Cisneros. Los Rojiblancos also managed to keep Rodolfo Cota, which was huge news for the team as many thought that he had played his last game for Chivas last season.
There were some key departures like Jose Juan Vazquez to Santos Laguna and Carlos Fierro to Cruz Azul. Los Tapatios will also be without defender Oswaldo Alanis because of his contract dispute. Matias Almeyda’s side had a disastrous Apertura 2017, missing out on the playoffs but still have a good enough team to be competitive in 2018.
