Liverpool to be handed competition in the race for top target

According to a report published by The Mirror, Liverpool could face competition from Manchester City in the race to sign Virgil Van Dijk during the January transfer window.

City boss Pep Guardiola has indicated that his club are in need of defensive reinforcements and considering that Van Dijk is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, he could be an attractive option.

The Citizens were once again victorious this weekend as they claimed a 2-0 win against Leicester City. The three points however came at a cost as John Stones is now set to be out of action for up to six weeks.

Stones has played an important role for City this season and with Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Nicholas Otamendi being the only cover, Van Dijk could be an attractive option. The Dutchman has the potential to grow with City and would also compliment Stones well.
