This Sunday, November 12, 2017 (9:00 AM Pacific) Switzerland will host Northern Ireland at St. Jakob Park for the second leg of a UEFA World Cup qualifier play-off. Switzerland has the slight advantage heading into the game but both teams should provide a very competitive effort in this decisive match.
Switzerland was the best second-place team in the group stage of the UEFA qualifiers and showed that in the first leg of this matchup. La Nati won the first leg by the slim margin of 1-0 but had 16 total shots, 64-percent possession and proved to be the dominant team. Ricardo Rodriguez scored the lone goal of the game via a penalty and that may prove to be enough to get a ticket to Russia.
Switzerland was undefeated at home during the first round of the qualifiers and inclusively outscored its opponents 13-2. Vladimir Petković’s men will have the major advantage in Basel and should be able to secure their place in the next World Cup.
There is still hope for the Northern Irish side coming off that tough 1-0 loss at Windsor Park in the first leg of the play-off. Going forward the team must get more from players like Kyle Lafferty and Stuart Dallas but defensively there were some nice performances by Chris Brunt and Jonny Evans in that first leg. This is not an impossible task for Michael O’Neill’s men but it will be a very tough one especially away from home at St. Jakob Park.
