According to Spanish media outlet El Gol Digital (via The Mag), Newcastle are planning on luring Barcelona goalie Jasper Cillessen to the Saint James’ Park in January.
Prior to the start of the new campaign, manager Rafa Benitez made a top netminder his priority, but lack of funds saw him stick with Rob Elliot.
The Irish star has done fairly well, shipping just 10 Premier League goals in 11 appearances.
Nevertheless, Rafa is looking at bringing in another capable hand in January, and has identified Cillessen.
The former Ajax shotstopper has been Barcelona’s backup option since arriving from Ajax 2 summers ago, and the lure of regular football could tempt him away.
Cillessen helped his former side to 3 Eredivisie titles during his 6-season stay.
The 28-year-old has also been Netherlands first choice goalie since 2014, and his experience and quality can help Newcastle’s ambitions.
Landing him will be huge for the Toons, but it’s not often we see a player moving from one of the best clubs in the world to a side that were playing in the second division months ago.
