This Thursday, July 20, 2017 (4:30 PM Pacific) Jamaica will play Canada at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona for a quarter-final match in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Both teams were among the most interesting in the group stage of the competition and should provide an entertaining duel.
Jamaica had a very solid running in the group stages, finishing second in Group C with five points, just behind Mexico in first. The Caribbean side started out the tournament with a dominant 2-0 win against Curacao, then had an impressive 0-0 draw against Mexico and finally finished with a disappointing 1-1 draw against El Salvador. The best result by far for the Islanders was that 0-0 draw against Mexico, working the counter-attack dangerously throughout the encounter.
Jamaica has several intriguing players on its roster, including Darren Mattocks of the Vancouver Whitecaps, who scored two goals in the group stages. This will be a tremendous test for Jamaica, coming up against a very solid team but it is a game the Caribbean team can win.
Canada exceeded expectations in the group stage portion of the competition, finishing second in Group A with five points, behind Costa Rica. The North Americans had a spectacular 4-2 win against French Guiana to start the tournament, then had two impressive draws against Costa Rica (1-1) and Honduras (0-0).
The standout player by far on Canada and perhaps in the entire 2017 Gold Cup competition has been the 16-year-old, Alphonso Davies, who scored three goals in the group stage matches. Canada has a young and exciting team, with Davies being the standout prodigy and the nation north of the border should provide a thrilling encounter this Wednesday.
