The time has arrived for the much anticipated SuperCopa MX match to be played between Club America and Queretaro this Sunday, July 16, 2017 (2:30 PM Pacific) at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. This contest will be the first official game during the semester’s campaign where the winner will earn a nice trophy, minor bragging right, and not much else.
Originally, this final had a lot of value as the winner earned direct qualification as Mexico #3 into Copa Libertadores. Unfortunately, since the changes to the Libertadores schedule, the Liga MX rejected any future invitations which means the SuperCopa MX today has no other reward other than bragging rights.
Nonetheless, Club America and Queretaro will use this game to ralize in what form their teams currently are in, one week prior to the start to the new Apertura 2017 season. The ‘gallos blancos’ qualified to this final after defeating Chivas of Guadalajara in the Apertura 2016 Copa MX final, while the ‘aguilas’ earned their ticket thanks to Chivas winning the past Clausura 2017 season. In other words, America is in this final after earning the most points combined from the group stages in the two Copa MX tournaments.
