Lionel Messi was challenged last season for the European Golden Shoe, but it wasn’t by the person you probably thought of. Instead, it was Bas Dost that pushed him quite a ways in the race for the 2016/17 trophy.
The Sporting Lisbon man scored 34 goals in the Portuguese League, beating out the likes of everyone but Messi. The list included Lewandowski and Aubameyang as well as Luis Suarez.
He looks like being a big signing for just about any side, but Newcastle have made it clear they won’t be held to pay more than he’s worth.
The 28-year-old Netherlands striker, according to the Chronicle, has been a target for years but they say that “Dost has a £52million release clause and that Jorge Jesus’ side won’t consider anything less than that this summer.”
The report states that the Magpies, though, won’t pay that much as they believe he isn’t worth that much after moving for significantly less just last summer from Wolfsburg.
This would be a big signing for Newcastle, but if that is the price then this is a prudent move as they look to build a more complete squad instead of a top-heavy one.
