Sunderland have been dealt an injury blow after it has been confirmed that Paddy McNair will miss the start of the Championship season due to his ACL injury.
The 22-year-old McNair had begun settling into life at the Stadium of Light when he suffered a season ending injury during a home victory over Hull City last November.
Optimism was created after McNair and team-mate Duncan Watmore, who suffered the same injury, returned to pre-season almost two weeks earlier than their team-mates and began training in Portugal to speed up their recoveries.
However tests have since revealed that McNair will definitely miss the start of next season.
Sunderland are currently short of established names ahead of next season and there is no doubt that the absence of McNair will be a blow to both the club as well as new manager Simon Grayson.
Nonetheless, McNair is still considered as a bright young prospect, who could be a star for the Black Cats next season.
