Newcastle reportedly boosted in their hopes of signing World Cup winner

According to reports, veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina is still on the radar of Newcastle United following the player’s decision to turn down a new deal with current club Napoli.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is a fan of Benitez having previously worked with the goalkeeper during his spell as manager of Liverpool.

The agent of the 34-year-old Reina, Manuel Garcia Quilon recently said that he expects his client to remain at Naples, saying, “Pepe will stay at Napoli until the end of his contract.“Certain issues have nothing to do with what happens on the pitch and do not interest us.”

However it now looks like the Spanish international has changed his mind, having refused a new two year deal with the club.

Reina is reportedly unhappy at Napoli has this was escalated during the club’s end of season dinner when club president Aurelio De Laurentiis made jokes about Reina’s performances this past season, which resulted in the players wife walking away.
