In the semifinals of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Toluca will host Chivas of Guadalajara at the Estadio Nemesio Diez this Thursday, May 18, 2017 (5:30 PM Pacific). Both teams have emerged as title contenders and have a lot of motivation to win it all which should make for a thrilling contest.
Toluca made it to the semifinals by defeating Santos Laguna by an aggregate score of 5-4 in the quarterfinals of the competition. Los Diablos are coming from a tough 3-1 loss at home in the second leg of that matchup and even manager, Hernan Cristante is concerned by that performance.
Toluca has proven to be a solid team with experienced players like Rubens Sambueza and Paulo Da Silva but age has also been a concern as the defense is old and struggles at times against quick forwards. Hernan Cristante’s side must try and utilize the home-field advantage in this first leg to get a favorable result against a very tough opponent.
Chivas of Guadalajara is coming from a much more convincing performance having beaten archrivals, Atlas 1-0 at home. Guadalajara got through from that quarter-final matchup by an aggregate score of 1-1. Los Rojiblancos do appear to have a stronger side and beat Toluca, 2-0 in the regular season of the Clausura 2017. Matias Almeyda should count with Rodolfo Pizarro for the game but could still be missing Angel Zaldivar.
Pizarro will help solidify the midfield and attack for Guadalajara and is an impactful player, having scored four goals during the regular season. Chivas should also look to take advantage of this first leg and try to rack up some away goals to make Toluca’s visit to the Estadio Chivas a lot more complicated. The match should be an intense duel with no clear winner as both teams have proven to be dangerous sides during this Clausura 2017.
