In week 17 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Pumas UNAM will host Puebla at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario this Sunday, May 7, 2017 (10:00 AM Pacific). Both teams are out of the playoff picture but will still look to end the season on a high note.
Pumas UNAM started off the Clausura 2017 emerging as a real title contender but then fell off as the weeks went by. The Felines are now in 16th place with 18 points and are mathematically out of the playoff picture. The real downfall of the Mexico City team came in the last couple of weeks of the tournament.
Los Capitalinos first fell to Veracruz 2-0 at home then had a complete meltdown last week falling 4-0 against Monarcas Morelia. The two consecutive losses to the teams fighting relegation are what ultimately cost Pumas a ticket to the playoffs. The fans and the team need a morale boost to end the season, especially playing at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario.
It is safe to say that the Clausura 2017 tournament was not ideal for Puebla but it was a successful campaign. Los Camoteros evaded relegation and that is all that matters even if Puebla is currently in last place with only 13 points. La Franja is coming off two consecutive losses to Leon and Necaxa respectively and could use the win to cap off a successful tournament.
Jose Cardozo’s future at the club is unclear and a win here is especially important for the Paraguayan manager to continue as La Franja’s head coach. Both sides will be motivated going into this match which should create an intense duel this Sunday.
