In week 16 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Toluca will host Queretaro at the Estadio Nemesio Diez this Sunday, April 30, 2017 (10:00 AM Pacific). The game is not expected to be spectacular as Toluca has already secured its spot in the playoffs while Queretaro is out of the playoffs.
Toluca has had a great campaign, currently in fifth place with 26 points, already having secured a playoff spot. The ‘diablos’ will be looking to obtain the three points from the game to get a better seed in the playoffs. Hernan Cristante’s men are coming off a tough 2-0 loss to Club Tijuana away from home, where the team looked inefficient and lost out on the field.
The age of the team has been a worry with an experienced defense that can be a liability when facing quicker, younger forwards. Toluca has lost two out of its last three games and needs a win here to go into the playoffs with some momentum. This is a game that the ‘diablos’ should be able to win against a weaker side in Queretaro.
Queretaro is pretty much eliminated from the playoffs at this point but Jaime Lozano could use the win here to add to his managerial resume. While the young head coach did not lead the ‘gallos’ to a playoff berth in his first tournament with the club, it is always nice to add wins to his portfolio. Queretaro has not won in its last five games and a win here would be a nice accolade for the ‘gallos blancos’ to get a win at the Estadio Nemesio Diez.
Jaime Lozano does count with one of the best players this tournament in the goalkeeper, Tiago Volpi who has 62 saves so far in this competition. The goalkeeping duel between the Brazilian Volpi and the Mexican, Alfredo Talavera will be among the more intriguing things to look out for in this match. The match while on paper does not seem that enticing should produce a decent encounter between two solid teams.
