Defender says Newcastle United move is a possibility

Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross, who is a reported target of Newcastle United, has refused to rule out a summer move to the Magpies.

According to rumors, the 29-year-old is considering a fresh challenge after a lengthy nine year spell at the Potteries.

With his contract set to expire next season, Mark Hughes team will have no choice but to sell should he not agree to a new deal. Shawcross added fuel to rumors by claiming that he will not be joining the Magpies as yet.

“I’m not going to Newcastle, at the moment. It’s paper talk. I’ve got a year left on my contract and any time a player comes to the later stages of his contract there’s going to be talk”, he said.

Newcastle are interested in luring the experienced campaigner as they bid to be a competitive side in the Premier League next season. Rafa Benitez’s side sealed their promotion by recording a 4-1 victory over Preston North End on Monday.
