Everton boss Ronald Koeman explains why he dropped 26-year-old

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has addressed why he opted to replace Joel Robles in goal with Maarten Stekelenburg during his side’s draw with West Ham during the weekend.

Koeman said, “Joel showed really good performances but he dropped his level in the last few weeks and that was the reason to change.”

Spanish international Robles had replaced Stekelenburg as first choice shot-stopper of the Merseyside club during the middle of December.

However, neither Robles nor Stekelenburg have managed to fully convince that they are worthy of being long-term first choice goalkeepers for Everton. The Merseyside club have been linked with bringing in another high profile custodian during the summer.

According to reports, Everton have pulled out of the race to sign Joe Hart and have reportedly made the signing of Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford a priority. There is certainly a good chance that Pickford will want to join the club considering that he will likely be given first team opportunities.
