In week 14 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Toluca will host Monterrey at the Estadio Nemesio Diez this Sunday, April 16, 2017 (10:00 AM Pacific). The match should be one of the best this weekend with both teams among the favorites to take the title this tournament.
Toluca has been one of the best teams this Clausura, currently in first place with 25 points, coming off a tough 2-0 loss to Cruz Azul. Before that loss, the ‘diablos rojos’ had won three straight games, defeating Leon, Necaxa and Pumas UNAM. Hernan Cristante has not had an overpowering goal-scorer this year but has counted with a strong, collective team effort.
The midfield has been the strong suit of the team, even with Rubens Sambueza out for most of the tournament. Strong performances by Pablo Barrientos, Jesus Mendez and even veteran, Carlos Esquivel. The ‘diablos’ have a rigid team that is built to be competitive this tournament and should be able to demonstrate that in this game.
Monterrey has also been one of the strongest teams in this tournament, currently in third place with 23 points. The ‘rayados’ are coming from a come-from-behind 2-2 draw to Santos Laguna midweek and last weekend defeated Chiapas 4-1 at home. Antonio Mohamed arguably has the deadliest offense in the Liga MX and will count with Edwin Cardona who has scored three goals in Monterrey’s last two games.
The ‘regios’ seem to have their playoff spot locked down and will be a strong contender for the title having a potent offense that has scored 23 goals so far, this tournament. The match should be an intriguing one this Sunday with both teams being among the best in the Liga MX this season.
