According to reports, Sunderland scout Gordon Chrisholm kept tabs on former Watford winger Diego Fabbrini, whilst he was in action for Serie B side Spezia during the weekend.
After transferring from Birmingham City for £1.75 million, the 26-year-old failed to establish himself within the first team and was sent out on loan to Spezia during the January transfer window.
Since moving back to Italy, he has earned rave reviews for his performances, which have led to the Black Cats keeping tabs on possibly signing him.
Fabbrini has reportedly been hoping that his loan spell in the Serie B would help him catch the attention of Serie A teams so that he could play in Italy’s top tier next season. However the attacker may be in with a chance to return to England.
Even if Sunderland are relegated to the Championship next season, Fabbrini may be a player that they will be able to sign. The Black Cats will also have to make a number of signings given that the strugglers are likely to have many players leaving should they be playing in the Championship next season.
