In the semifinals of the Copa Corona MX, Monarcas Morelia will host Cruz Azul at the Estadio Morelos this Tuesday, April 4, 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific). Both teams have had problems in the Liga MX, but have done very well in the Copa MX competition.
Monarcas Morelia is exceeding expectations in the Liga MX Clausura 2017, currently in 10th place with 16 points. The team from Michoacán is coming from a surprising 0-0 draw to Chivas of Guadalajara this past weekend. The Monarchs have been doing extraordinarily well in the Copa MX, having beaten Toluca and Club Tijuana to get to this semi-final match.
In both matches goalkeeper, Sebastian Sosa was an immense figure, saving three penalties against Toluca and having an outstanding match against Tijuana. Roberto Hernandez does utilize an alternate squad in the Copa MX giving opportunities to players like Sebastian Sosa, Juan Pablo Rodriguez, Cristian Penilla and Miguel Sansores. That alternate squad has worked wonders for ‘la monarquia’ and should fare quite well in this match.
The playoffs in the Liga MX seem unreachable for Cruz Azul at this stage of the competition. The ‘cementeros’ have had an underwhelming campaign currently in 15th place with 10 points. The most recent result for ‘la maquina’ was a heart-breaking 3-1 loss to Veracruz in a game that Cruz Azul needed to win. Paco Jemez has been under pressure all year long, but this game is of extreme magnitude to both the organization and himself.
Cruz Azul does not look like it has much to play for in the Liga MX, the Copa MX being the only salvageable thing from this Clausura 2017. Paco Jemez and the ‘celestes’ will be motivated to get the win and a strong side is expected to be used by the Spanish manager. The match should be an exciting one with both teams wanting to advance to the final of the tournament.
