In week 11 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Necaxa will host Chiapas at the Estadio Victoria this Saturday, March 18, 2017 (8:00 PM Pacific). The match is an important one between two teams that can be heavy contenders for relegation next season.
Necaxa has had a difficult tournament in 17th place with nine points and looks like a team that will miss the playoffs this Clausura. The ‘rayos’ are winless in their last three Liga MX matches, having tied against Atlas and Santos laguna and losing 4-1 to Queretaro. Before this run of bad form, Necaxa did have an impressive 2-1 road win against Club Tijuana, which has been their most impressive victory of this tournament.
While the defense has been average at best for the ‘rayos’ this tournament, the offense does have a few players that can be a danger to their opponents. The standouts have been Claudio Riaño, who has three goals and Edson Puch, who has two goals and an assist. Alfonso Sosa’s pragmatic style of play may work against Chiapas’ upbeat-passing style of play, but it should be interesting to see which style prevails in this game.
Chiapas has been the most surprising team in the Liga MX this tournament, obtaining wins against Chivas, Club America, Tigres UANL and Toluca. Chiapas also has losses against Morelia, Puebla and Veracruz, making the ‘jaguares’ one of the most intriguing teams in the league. Most recently the team fighting relegation fell 2-0 to Cruz Azul in week 9 of the competition. Chiapas did not look all that bad in the match, having goal scoring opportunities but failing to be clinical in front of net.
Sergio Bueno has implemented a very enticing style of play that is upbeat with a lot of short passes. This has earned the team a very high passing percentage at 77.4 percent collectively as a group. The team is an interesting group with veterans like Moises Munoz and Aquivaldo Mosquera, but also with promising players like Mateus Goncalves and Dieter Villalpando. Chiapas have provided some exciting encounters throughout this Clausura and this match should be no different.
