Liverpool legend urges Klopp to sign 34-year-old star – The next McAllister?

Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan, a member of Liverpool’s all-conquering sides of the 1980s, has said that Liverpool should turn to an unlikely man to be their goal scorer come next season.

While writing for the Irish Independent, Whelan threw out some very unlikely names that the Reds should look at signing as they look to secure a top goal scorer. The most surprising, though, might just be the suggestion that they should sign Sunderland man Jermain Defoe.

Defoe, a former England international, is 34 years old now. But Whelan still says “he would be well worth the small amount of money needed to get him.” There is some precedent here, mind you. Remember the signing of Gary McAllister?

The Reds signed McAllister on a free transfer at the age of 35 back in July of 2000. They went on to win the ‘fake treble’ with McAllister in the side, including the famous UEFA Cup victory over Alaves.

This may seem like a crazy idea, but it’s not as crazy as many would think. Still yet, it looks unlikely to happen as Jurgen Klopp will look for players that better fit his system and style of play.
