In week 9 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Pumas UNAM will host Santos Laguna at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario this Sunday, March 5, 2017. (10:00 AM Pacific). Both teams need the three points from the game to make a playoff push this tournament.
Pumas had started off the season great, but has fallen off in the last few weeks, coming off two straight losses and not having won a game in their last six games in all competitions. The Mexico City team is now in 10th place with 11 points, only one point away from a playoff spot. Defense has been an issue recently haven given up 13 goals in those six winless games. Francisco Palencia’s side must go back to accumulating point if they wish to make the playoffs in this very contested playoff race. A win against another playoff contender in Santos Laguna will be a big step in the right direction for the felines.
Santos Laguna is the only undefeated team in the league but has only accumulated 12 points in seventh place in the Liga MX. Santos Laguna’s biggest problem in this tournament has been keeping a lead with six draws in the Clausura. Overall the team has been playing well under the leadership of Jose Manuel de la Torre, utilizing a good mix of youngsters and experienced veterans.
Different strikers have also stepped up for the team with Julio Furch, Jonathan Rodriguez and Djaininy Tavares providing seven total goals for the club. Walter Gael Sandoval has been a key play-maker with the team as well providing the ‘guerreros’ with four assists. Santos Laguna is coming off four straight draws and needs to start getting three points from matches to be a playoff contender in this very contested Clausura 2017.
