In week 9 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 Necaxa will host Atlas at the Estadio Victoria this Saturday, March 4, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific). Both teams are still in the mix for the playoffs and could use the three points to make that push.
Necaxa has not had a successful tournament in 16th place with only eight points, despite this the ‘rayos’ are still just four points away from a playoff spot. Alfonso Sosa’s side emerged as a dark horse in the Apertura 2016 and will need to work harder to do the same in this tournament. The team from Aguascalientes has been decent as of late, only losing one game in its last four encounters.
In this span Necaxa achieved its biggest win of the Clausura getting a 2-1 win against Club Tijuana at the Estadio Caliente. The ‘rayos’ are also coming from a hard-fought 2-2 draw to Santos Laguna away from home. Necaxa has shown in a few encounters this season that its defensive style of play can still be effective, especially with a goalkeeper like Marcelo Barovero who leads the league with 40 saves in this tournament. The match should be a big test for Necaxa against a solid team like Atlas.
Atlas is on a good run currently, only losing one game in its last five matches, getting three wins in this span. The ‘rojinegros’ are currently in a playoff spot in fifth place with 13 points, only three points back of Club Tijuana in first. Jose Cruz has offered good leadership on this team, also providing chances for younger players.
Atlas has a good mix of youth players and experienced veterans who can lead the team to success in this tournament. The teams current top goalscorer has been an unlikely source in Martin Barragan who has three goals in only four games as a starter. Fidel Martinez and Matias Alustiza have also provided good options going forward for the ‘zorros’ with four goals combined between the two.
Youngster Clifford Aboagye, has also been an interesting player looking like a good play-maker if he is given more of a chance. This Atlas team is well-built and should be able to compete going forward in this tournament, it will be interesting to see how the team fares against Necaxa at the Estadio Victoria.
