An intriguing match-up in this week 9 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017 will be when Monterrey host Queretaro at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer this Saturday, March 4, 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific). Both teams can use the three points to make a playoff push this tournament which should make the match entertaining.
Monterrey is coming off a tough 2-0 loss to Club Tijuana in week 8 of the Clausura, where the team looked nonexistent, not producing anything going forward. The defense was also shaky in the game with Dorlan Pabon needing to push back and help on defense in some instances. Before that loss at the Estadio Caliente, the ‘rayados’ had been undefeated in the tournament with 3 wins and 4 ties.
While the attack did not show up in Tijuana last Friday, it is still one of the deadliest in the league with Dorlan Pabon leading the way with five goals, being the top goalscorer of the Clausura. Antonio Mohamed’s side is currently in sixth place with 13 points, only three back of Club Tijuana in first and could use the three points from the match.
Queretaro has been one of the most fascinating teams of the Clausura 2017 tournament, being distinct under the leadership of manager, Jaime Lozano. Before Lozano took over the ‘gallos blancos’ had not won and had not scored in four games. Now under Lozano in four games, Queretaro is undefeated with three wins and a draw. The ‘gallos’ have also exploded offensively with 11 goals in those four games, after not having scored a goal in their first four games.
One of the most impressive players in this span has been Neri Cardozo, who has provided five assists in three games. Luis Miguel Noriega has also been an important player with three goals and an assist. Of course, Jaime Lozano also counts with one of the best goalkeepers in the league with Tiago Volpi, who has 38 saves on the Clausura. The match should be an interesting one, providing a possible preview of a playoff fixture.
