Former Saints star David Prutton has taken time out his busy schedule to speak to the media about the status of Southampton center back Virgil van Dijk, who is currently injured and will miss the EFL Cup final this Sunday.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Prutton explained his reasoning for his belief that Liverpool will be able to pip their rivals to sign the very important center back.  Prutton said that “Liverpool obviously have a good dialogue and a business relationship with Southampton… it probably gives them a head start…”

Prutton is correct here, but this move still looks like it will take a lot of doing on Liverpool’s end.  Especially if rumors of a Chinese takeover are true.  Furthermore, the fans are getting a little sick of the Reds picking off their Saints’ heroes.

On top of all of this, Liverpool would have to fend off interest from clubs that are more certain at the moment.  Surely, clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea will have interest.  It’ll be nearly impossible to sign van Dijk when they get involved.  You can have hopes, but you shouldn’t hold your breath on this one.
