Club Leon will host Monarcas Morelia in the first week of Copa MX Clausura 2017 action this Wednesday, January 18 (6:55 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Leon. Javier Torrente is continuing his reign over the ‘Esmeraldas’ and is continuing to succeed in the role having beat Necaxa this week at the Estadio Victoria. This match will be one of the three games this week between Liga MX teams; the other two are Queretaro vs Cruz Azul and Club America vs Santos Laguna.

The ‘Panzas Verdes’ do count with a strong string of reserves led by fan-favorite, Carlos ‘Gullit’ Pena. The former Mexican international came on as a sub against Necaxa and provided the winning goal for ‘La Fiera’. With that goal, Pena may have found his way back onto the starting lineup for Leon, but chances are Torrente will wait before making the decision. Jose Antonio Rodriguez is also a strong candidate for Torrente to have between the posts. The former, Chivas keeper did well in the ‘rojilancos’ Copa MX run last season.

Club Leon will have no easy task against Monarcas Morelia. Pablo Marini has done much better than people have expected and has secured four points for ‘La Monarquia’ this season. The team from Michoacan also count with some key reserve players including the Colombian duo of Cristian Penilla and Luis Gabriel Rey.

Penilla has looked impressive coming off the bench for the Monarchs this season; the midfielder is skillful and can create chances as well. The 36-year-old, Luis Gabriel Rey is near the end of his illustrious career, but he has proven that he can score anywhere. If given the chance to play, ‘El Canguro’ has not lost his ability to be a clinical finisher. That, combined with the chances Penilla can create, should give Morelia a good chance to take this game.
