Jose Mourinho sheds light on Manchester United’s transfer strategy

Jose Mourinho held his first press conference as Manchester United manager yesterday, in which he made it clear he had identified four positions to strengthen this summer.

Mourinho said: “We made a nucleus of four priorities, four positions to give a certain balance to the squad, to give a certain push in terms of quality and the qualities I need and want. Especially the ones with more vision.

“I am more a manager that likes specialists and not so much the multi-functional players because I am very clear in my approach. Multifunctional players are like one or two, when you are in trouble you need someone who can fill but basically I want specialists.”

United have already signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly this summer, with Borussia Dortmund attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan widely expected to complete his move to Old Trafford in the coming days.

Borussia Dortmund announced Mkhitaryan’s transfer to Manchester United a few days ago, but the English giants are yet to confirm the deal.

Jose Mourinho dropped a major hint over a deal for the Armenian international, saying United have signed three players instead of two.

Mourinho engaged in a humorous conversation with the club’s press officer and basically confirmed Mkhitaryan’s signing.

“But from this list we have two or three?” Mourinho asked. [press officer: ‘Two at the moment.”] “We have three.”

The Portuguese manager also suggested he wants the club to secure the fourth target’s signature as early as possible.

He said” When the fourth target is in, we will breathe easily. We will get the fourth player well before the transfer deadline. But the market is still open then. You never know what happens.

“It is important for me that all my players are happy. Maybe someone might want to leave and we agree to it. Then someone else might have to come in.”

Mourinho is believed to be keen to strengthen the team’s midfield this summer, so it’d be safe to assume the fourth player will be a midfielder.

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has been heavily linked with a return to Old Trafford in the past couple of weeks.

Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola, has already brought Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Old Trafford this summer and another client of his, HenrikhMkhitaryan, is also expected to become a United player soon.

United’s great relationship with Raiola could be invaluable for the club’s chances of signing Pogba this summer.
