In his statements as quoted by Goal.com, Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper and a 5-time Premier League winner Peter Schmeichel has claimed that Wayne Rooney should play in the midfield for the Red Devils.
Rooney has been away from action since featuring in the defeat away at Sunderland at the start of February. However, while injuries haven’t helped his case this season, a goal tally of 7 in 22 league appearances fails to paint an encouraging picture.
However, to be fair to Rooney, five of those goals have come in the last 10 matches. Thus, before getting himself injured, he was in his best form yet again. After his poor form in the first half of this season, Van Gaal experimented with the position of the English striker.
Thus, Van Gaal has already done what the Danish goalkeeper has prescribed recently. And with both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in top form, it is easy to envisage why Schmeichel is advocating for a midfield role for Rooney.
“Wayne can play in different positions,” the ex-United stopper added. “If you ask Wayne I think he wants to play in the No.10 position.
“But I’d like to see Wayne develop into a midfield player. He can play a little bit like Paul Scholes could. I’m sure he can develop the engine to play in midfield.
“Wayne’s vision, the way he sees football is really beneficial to the way Manchester United should play.
In the last few matches where Manchester United have played without Rooney, the duo of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are in fine form. In fact, in the last 5 games that Rooney has missed, the duo of Martial and Rashford has managed 4 goals between them.
Thus, while 4 goals in 5 matches is not a flabbergasting offense by any stretch of imagination, Van Gaal might still be forced to play Rooney in the midfield if the other two strikers continue to perform.
