The Champions League History: F.C Barcelona vs FC Bayern Munich

The last time FC Barcelona encountered FC Bayern Munich in the semifinals of The Champions League, Bayern ended up as champions of Europe. The Germans seemed unstoppable during the 2012–13 season,  as Borussia Dortmund defeated Mourinho’s Real Madrid  and Heyncke’s Bayern scored a historic 7 goals against Barcelona. The reigning champions were favorites to win it a second time, but this time with the help of Pep Guardiola; Barcelona’s previous manager. And they got close to winning it againThat is until they faced Real Madrid.

Historically, Munich has always been a nightmare for Los Merengues , but that year, Real studied Bayern and they were left devastated. it was a disastrous outcome for Pep loosing 5-0; over the stretch of two legs. Many called for his resignation, many called for a public apology, but Pep continued and stayed with the club, promising a different result in the future.

Now Barcelona faces their toughest obstacle yet; Pep Guardiola.Their most decorated manager ever. A manager who inspired a historic Treble victory, a new identity in Barcelona’s Tiki-Taka, and a team some consider the best ever assembled. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of his previous team, and although major changes have occurred during his tenure , key players  still reside in La Blaugrana such as Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Pique, Busquests, Mascherano, and Dani Alvez.

How will Luis Enrique inspire Barcelona to victory May 6th? By taking advantage of Bayern’s current injuries. With a severely injured side, Guardiola will make his return to Camp Nou with key injured players such as Ribery, Robben, Javi Martínez etc (although this is always likely to change).

Pep’s Bayern is drastically different from recent times favoring a more possessive game instead of fast paced, quick balls, and counters. Same thing can be about Barcelona favoring a more counter attacking style. What does this mean for Barca? First of all they need to take advantage of their defensive holes the same way FC Porto took their chances.

Barcelona has been in great form lately playing some of their best football. Messi,Neymar, Suárez all have been perfectly in sync and it will be up to them to seal their fate in the first leg of the Camp Nou. With the second leg taking place in May 12th in the Allianz Arena, Lucho has the hard task of ensuring a large margin victory at home to have a cushion for second game that determines who will move on to Final.
