Argentina will host Slovenia at the Ciudad de La Plata stadium in a pre-World Cup friendly match on Saturday, June 7 (4:00 PM local time, 11:45 PST), in the last match for the La Albiceleste before the World Cup.
Argentina secured a 3-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Buenos Aires last Wednesday, but despite the good match played by the team, there were a couple of bad news as defender Martin Demichelis (Manchester City) and striker Rodrigo Palacio (Inter) left the pitch due to ankle injuries. They won’t play against Slovenia, and they’re in doubt for the first World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In last Wednesday’s match, manager Alejandro Sabella kept strikers Sergio Agüero and Gonzalo Higuaín as well as defenders Pablo Zabaleta and Ezequiel Garay out of the lineup because they weren’t at a hundred percent physically, and if they aren’t fit they won’t play against Slovenia either because the boss won’t risk them just a few days before the World Cup.
The squad will fly to Belo Horizonte – where their training center is located, on Monday, only three days before the beginning of the World Cup. Argentina is in the Group F, and they’ll face Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 15 at the Maracaná stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Iran on June 21 in Belo Horizonte and Nigeria on June 25 in Porto Alegre.
On the other hand, Slovenia didn’t qualify to the World Cup because they finished in third position of their group in the UEFA qualify, behind Switzerland and Iceland.
They played a friendly last Wednesday against Uruguay at Centenario stadium, and lost 0-2. Nevertheless, they seem to be a more difficult opponent than Trinidad and Tobago for Argentina, as they are at the 25th position in the FIFA World Ranking, while the Soca Warriors are at the 71th place.
Among their main players are defenders Bojan Jokić (Villarreal) and Mišo Brečko (FC Köln), as well as many players from the Italian league: goalkeeper Samir Handanović (Inter), defender Boštjan Cesar (Chievo Verona) and midfielder Josip Iličić (Fiorentina).
Argentina vs Slovenia Prediction
Argentina is clearly the favorite team to win on Saturday because they have far better players in the squad.
However, the players won’t risk their fitness at all since they want to reach the World Cup in good physical condition, so in my opinion there won’t be a huge goal difference.
