The Daily Star is reporting that Manchester United are eyeing Schalke starlet, Julian Draxler. Draxler nearly went to Arsenal in January, and is valued at around 37 million pounds.

Draxler is currently 20 years old and plays in the Bundesliga for Schalke 04. He is a midfielder who can play on either flank or through the middle.

Manchester United are in desperate need to bolster their squad especially in the wider areas of the midfield. United have stuck with Moyes so far and Moyes is very much intrigued by German midfielders.

David Moyes has also shown interest in Ilkay Gundogan, Marco Reus, and Toni Kroos, all German midfelders. Draxler has really impressed as of late and its only a matter of time before he joins a bigger club.

This rumor is coming from The Daily Star, which makes this rumor strength about a 5 out of 10. Draxler is only 20 years of age and already looks to be a future star, so it’s no wonder big clubs are after his services.

Draxler’s potential move to United would help them so much because of his skills and his versatility. Draxler can serve as a secondary striker, but he could also play in a wider midfield role, an area that United need desperately. He is not an out right winger, but he can play there effectively and would help the team. I rate this potential transfer as an 8 out of 10 in that regard.

Draxler is young, he is talented, and he is being watched by the biggest clubs around the world. There is no doubt that this transfer could happen this summer if he wants to leave Schalke. United are not going to be in the Champions League next season which lowers the likelihood, but they can always splash the cash and acquire his services. I give this about a 20% chance as of now, but the chances would be better if they acquire other players as well.

  1. If Man U wish to differentiate themselves from the other EPL clubs then they should build a Germanic/Slav team that consists of – (a) midfielders – Konoplianka, Reus, Kroos, Tadic and (b) defenders – Sepsi, Ivanov, Subotic, Piszczek and (c) striker – Mandzukic and (d) goalkeeper – Tim Krul.
Man U can keep Rooney, van Persie, Mata, Kagawa, Januzaj and Rafael and toss the rest of the players in the trash bin.
Sadly, the EPL “Home Grown Player Rule” (required as the EPL acknowledges that on the whole, UK players are second-rate talents and therefore need to be protected from the standards of free enterprise/honest competition) will mean that Man U will need to hang on to some UK anchors.
However, first and foremost they need a manager who can make this all work and that would be either Lucien Favre or Joachim Loew.
In order to collect 100% of the sponsors fees (Chevrolet, Nike, AOL, etc.), Man U need to win the EPL, play in the CL final and play at least in the semi-final of the Capital One Cup and FA Cup. To achieve this they must build a team that is capable of competing with the Bayern Munich’s and the Real Madrid’s of the world. It is not enough to have a team that can win the EPL – they must be able to win everything.
If Man U do not do this then the Glazer’s have shown they treat Man U the same way as they treat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – content to be mid-table or cellar dwellers.
