The Mirror is reporting that Arsenal are in prime position to sign center back Matthias Ginter from SC Freiburg. Ginter is currently valued at around 8 million pounds and being closely watched by United as well.

Ginter is 20 years of age and plays for Freiburg in the Bundesliga. Arsene Wenger sent his chief scout to Germany to watch him play this past weekend.

Ginter has been monitored by Arsenal for months now, but it seems as though Arsenal are stepping up their interest in him. Ginter was recently called up by Germany in their friendly against Chile and looks to be a future star.

It is being reported that Wenger sees Ginter as a long term legend if he joins The Gunners. If they are able to acquire him, they will have to fight off the interest of clubs like Manchester United.

The Mirror is usually spot on with their rumors, unlike some sources, which makes me think the rumor strength here is about an 8.

If Ginter was to come to The Emirates, he would help the team, but it would be more of a future signing. Ginter is still only 20 years old and he could replace Thomas Vermaelen, who is set to depart the club this summer. Ginter would be a backup center back to Mertesacker and Koscielny initially, but could always impress and find himself on the team sheet. This move would help Arsenal for the future, and so I give it about a 5 out of 10.

Ginter has been watched by Arsenal for many months now and it seems as though the interest will result in a bid. Arsenal need a replacement for Vermaelen and more depth in defense and Ginter would bring that to the club. United seem interested as well, but Arsenal seem like leaders for him and this transfer looks like it will happen come summer. This transfer looks about an 80 percent chance of occurring.
