Vertonghen Warns Tottenham To Improve, Or Else Miss Out On Champions League Football

When Totteham Hotspur splashed over £100 million on new recruits over the summer, it was widely believed that Spurs would not only qualify for the Champions League, but mount a serious title challenge as well.

However, as things turned out, many of the new recruits largely failed to deliver and manager Andre Villas-Boas was duly relieved of his duties after a string of poor results, with Spurs languishing in 7th position.

The appointment of Tim Sherwood has certainly given the club renewed hope, as the young manager has managed to turn the club’s fortunes around. That being said though, Spurs still have it all to do if they are to claim a Champions League spot.

Tottenham registered a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cardiff City at White Hart Lane last night, which handed them a vital three points in their pursuit of a top-four spot, but defender Jan Vertonghen was not impressed with his side’s performance and urged the team to improve in order to stand a chance of claiming a Champions League place, as the club will face a ridiculously tough run-in March.

The Belgian star warned, “We needed those three points, but we will have to improve because we are playing better sides in March. It is not just Liverpool we are chasing; I think there are other teams who can drop down.

“We are just watching fourth place – it does not matter who we catch. It was not our best game (on Sunday) but we are back on track after losing to Norwich.”

March will certainly be a critical month, as well as a litmus test to define Spurs’ top-four credentials, with the North-London side coming up against their direct rivals for fourth spot in Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool plus a tricky fixture against Southampton.

What do you think? Do Spurs have it in them to make a late surge and secure a Champions League finish OR Is the top-four beyond them with the Liverpool performing so well?
