Liverpool Wants Tottenham Star Defender – Champions League Is The Key

According to Metro, Liverpool will make a move for Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen this summer. Liverpool are dark horses to win the Premier League crown because of their suspect backline, thus the need to strengthen in the summer.

Vertonghen currently plays for Spurs, but made it clear that he wants Champions League football come next season. At the moment, Tottenham are four points back of Manchester City for fourth but City have two games in hand.

Last week, Vertonghen said he would look to leave the club if they are unable to secure fourth spot. It is not looking good for Tottenham but there still is time to make a push.

Vertonghen is a good defender and has been a great signing for Spurs since arriving from Ajax in 2012. Vertonghen would fit nicely with Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool because of his versatility.

Vertonghen is a defender who can play as a center back or can move to left back as well. He not only defends but can also get forward in the attacking third, something that Liverpool like from defenders, especially full backs.

If this transfer does happen at the end of the season, it would be a big blow for Spurs. Vertonghen has arguably been their best defender since his move to White Hart Lane. It would potentially open the door for other players at the club to seek a move away, which would hurt the club.

This rumor is coming from The Daily Mail which is why I rate this rumor strength a 6 out of 10. Vertonghen moving to Liverpool would help the club in an area they need strengthening, thus I give it a 7 out of 10.

This move has potential to happen, but depends on how the season ends up for both of these clubs. I give the chances to be around 60%. Vertonghen will not stay at Spurs if they do not make Champions League and he is a good enough player to play for a top side, if Liverpool splash the cash.

Liverpool may not end up winning the title at the end, but securing Champions League next season will allow them a year to bolster the squad. Defense has been the issue all year and Vertonghen would make them a better side in defense and attack.
