The Cruz Azul vs Veracruz Liga MX Week 4 match will be played on Saturday, January 25, 2014 (3:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Azul. Both teams are still undefeated through three Liga MX matches, although Cruz Azul is the favorite for this home match. Also, due to the suspension the Estadio Azul served on Week 2, this will actually be the first home game where Cruz Azul fans will be allowed to attend.
Coach Luis Fernando Tena has done a good job with Cruz Azul, although his squad has not looked impressive, they have played well enough to grind out the wins. Cruz Azul started off the league with a 0-0 away draw at Monterrey, followed it up with a 2-1 home victory over Santos (in an empty stadium), and earned another three points by defeating Chiapas 1-0 in Week 3. Cruz Azul would take the #1 spot in the Liga MX with a win over Veracruz (at least temporarily).
Veracruz are relegation candidates, although they appear to be fairly safe due to the terrible form that Atlante and Atlas find themselves in. This means that coach Luna only needs a decent mid-table position to save the team. His team has done just that so far, with a very limited style, Veracruz has been able to remain undefeated in the Liga MX. Veracruz tied at Chiapas 1-1, defeated fellow relegation candidate Atlante 2-1 at home, and tied 1-1 against Chivas last week.
The main player to watch for Cruz Azul is Marco Fabian, the creative winger who garners all the attention on and off the field. The speedy player has had a decent season so far, although he is still not up to the level we once saw from him in the London Olympics. Veracruz’ main player is, without a doubt, Angel Reyna, the experienced “10” is Veracruz’ only star. Reyna had a fantastic season last semester, and much of his club’s success depends on his goal-scoring and play making abilities.
Cruz Azul vs Veracruz Prediction
This is essentially the season home opener for Cruz Azul, and we can thus expect a decent turnout at the Estadio Azul. Cruz Azul have demonstrated, even this early in the season, that they are challenging for the title, while Veracruz’ modest squad can at best hope for a mid-table standing. Playing at home, Marco Fabian, Torrado, et al should have what it takes to defeat Veracruz. The Cruz Azul vs Veracruz match will end in a 2-0 for the home side.
