The Chivas vs Atlas match, the Clasico Tapatio, will take place this Sunday, September 29, 2013 (3:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Omnilife. Both Guadalajara based teams are struggling, each has just seven points and sits at the bottom of the standings. This Clasico will be played just for honor, as any hopes of going to the playoffs was long erased for these teams.
Chivas is in emergency mode. After an awful start to the season, Chivas is basically out of the playoff race. Coach Ortega decided to focus on the Copa MX, trying to salvage something in the Apertura 2013, only to be eliminated by Leon this past Wednesday. Now, Chivas really has nothing to play for, the only thing left is to win honor, by defeating city rival Atlas (and later on America in the Super Clasico).
Jorge Vergara has stated that there will be massive changes in the off-season, as he is looking to revamp his team. What these are and whether they will work is another question, what is certain, is that the Chivas players know that any one of them might be kicked off the team if they do not play better. Luckily for Chivas, they will face an Atlas squad that has been as bad if not worse this season.
Atlas is the only team in the Liga MX that is yet to win a game. After 11 matches, they have tied seven times, and lost four games. Coach Omar Asad has not been able to find the winning formula for his team, but he might not have a better chance at earning a win than against the struggling cross-town rival.
Chivas vs Atlas Prediction
Both of these team are awful, and are only playing for pride (and relegation points). Nonetheless, the long rivalry Chivas and Atlas share means that the players should at least give it their all in an attempt to please their fan base. Look for a tight, intense game that will end in dramatic fashion. Due to Chivas’ current awful state, I predict Atlas will come out with its first victory of the season. The Chivas vs Atlas match will end in a 2-1 victory for Atlas.
